Books and Articles
The classic reference for Pranayama is Chapter II of Hatha Yoga Pradipika, originally written in the 15th century AD.
The best-known modern reference is The Light On Pranayama: The Yogic Art of Breathing (294 pages, 1985) by B K S Iyengar (born 1918). The book emphasizes that Pranayama can be dangerous — it must be done under the guidance of an experienced teacher, and only after one has sufficient practice with Yoga (which prepares the body for Pranayama). Check out B K S Iyengar practicing in 1938 (silent films): Part I and Part II. And see him practicing in 1991.

That looks lilke a very comprehensive resource. I have never tried Pranayama but may be these videos will provide the right inspiration ;-) (pun not intended)
Thank you for these resources. They have been really helpful. I have been practicing the first three Pranayama from past one month.
After reading the “Timing and Duration” section I realized that that I haven’t been doing it long enough. I can correct it now.
Do you practice it every day or twice a day. If so, what is your ritual like?
Yoga and pranayam are wonderful things. I’ve been following it for last 7 years and have seens its amazing effects. Even 5 minute practice of Bhastrika and Kapalbhrati in morning helps to keep the whole day fresh and energetic.
Thanks for spreading awareness of this ancient science.

Thank you for providing this comprehensive list of videos and resources. It is very helpful.
In the link for the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/hyp/hyp04.htm,
it seems that the text in Devanagari is inaccurate. For example, it says ‘chhale vaatam’ not ‘chale vaatam’ (in Devanagari it is wrong, although in English script it does say ‘chale’). Since in Sanskrit/Hindi, ‘ch’ and ‘chh’ are different letters, it can change the meaning totally.
Thank you again.
Thank you for this wonderful resource. I have bookmarked and this helps a lot. Anulom Vilom and Kapalabhati have been very helpful to me!
I have been practising yoga for the last 22 years and more of pranayamam for the last two years.I keep verifying the glucose level to see the impact of pranayamam.I found that pranayamam with food like jowar and oats bring the glucose level to normal.
